Welcome to you newcomer, here is a good place to start.
When I first came to this forum we had 2 procedures to encrypt/decrypt messages with Enigma.
As time went on, in an everlasting effort to be as close as possible to the WWII German procedures and as documents were made available, our procedures did undergo some changes.
I now think about the newcomer who, just as I did, would like to practice his decoding skills on old messages in this forum, gathering enough confidence to send his own encrypted message on air.
Well, if you're new and feel a bit lost, I will try to collect and gather here useful information and links that are posted elsewhere by other people on this forum about using your Enigma to decrypt this forum's messages.
First of all this forum is linked to this site www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/ where you can find just about anything you need.
In particular, the U571 codesheets needed to decode the newsletter.
Of course, you'll need an Enigma simulator www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/download-enigma-simulator (much cheaper than a real one).
Ok, here comes the hard/fun part.
For 3 rotor enigma, we use enigma model M3 (with Reflector B)
Please mark any message encrypted with these keys and procedure with [EWCG2018]
The procedure for encrypting a message is at
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/create-an-enigma-message
The procedure to decrypt is at
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/encrypting-a-message
M3 procedure is easy, you only need a Codesheet.
Their header looks like this:
[EWGC2016]
QDM LST
these six letters outside the message are a sure sign of M3 procedure.
The 2018 Codesheets for the M3 procedure are here.
enigmaworldcodegroup.freeforums.net/attachment/download/82
For 4 rotor enigma, we use the TRITON/navy/uboat procedure
Please mark any message encrypted with these keys and procedure with [EWCG2018TRITON]
The procedure to encrypt a message is at
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/basic-encrypting-and-sending-proced
The decrypt procedure at is at
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/basic-decrypting-procedure
M4 procedure is a bit harder. In addition to the Codesheet, you need a Bigram Table.
Their header looks like this
[EWCG2017TRITON]
BRO 0101/03 001 67
these numbers outside the message definitely indicate a M4 procedure.
Instructions on the site have been adapted to the new M4 procedure, but M4 messages dated before 2018 use the old M4 procedure briefly explained below
[EWCG2017TRITON] [FLK]
The old triton procedures used a three letter message key. Basically, the random letter you add at step 14 in the procedure (e.g. Q) is not used at step 15 (you only type 3 letters) and the leftmost letter at step 16 is not to be changed (remaining the same as the start position..."T" in the example used in the procedure)
Around August 2017 people in this forum started using all four letters in the messages and when doing so another tag was added. It was some other tags first but in the end, stabilized as - [FLK].
Starting in 2018, all TRITON messages should follow the FourLetterKey procedure.
Therefore, the [FLK] tag is not required anymore.
The 2018 Codesheets for the M4 Triton procedure are here
enigmaworldcodegroup.freeforums.net/attachment/download/78
You will also need the Bigram Tables here (2 files)
enigmaworldcodegroup.freeforums.net/attachment/download/79
enigmaworldcodegroup.freeforums.net/attachment/download/80
Now for the ADVANCED procedure (not much harder, much more fun).
One of our members did an amazing work collecting, gathering, translating WWII declassified documents and came up with the closest to the real procedure we've had yet.
Basically, it is a M4 procedure but this time you have two sets of Codesheets.
TRITON and HYDRA ...and the message header tells us which one to use.
Therefore, please mark any message encrypted with these keys and procedure with [EWCG2018ADV]
Here is the link to all the needed documents (and more) as well as the 2018 M4 Advanced procedure Codesheets.
My advice is to start with the document named "Quick Reference Guide for M4"
The M4 procedures, all have their OFFIZIER variant.
These consist of a second (simplified) encryption so that ordinary troopers would not be aware of the message's content.
The Offizier procedure is here
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/officer-to-officer-encryptingsending
Many thanks to all the members whose posts and links I've Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V'd.
I hoped this helped a bit.
If some admin feels this post is worthy, feel free to make it a sticky.
