And for your convenience, here is the message:
www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/copy-of-newslettersHello to all of my Enigma World Code Group Friends,
The ghost of U-boat Admiral Donitz visited me last night in my sleep and ordered me to, “Challenge
them! Challenge them!” We all know what that means, don’t we? Yes, sir, it’s Kriegsmarine Basic 4-
rotor machine time! Thanks to member Jim Starbird, we have an actual Enigma message that was sent
from U-boat Captain/Lieutenant Helmut Rosenbaum of the U-73 to U-boat headquarters on 11 August
1942 from the Mediterranean Sea. The aircraft carrier was the HMS Eagle. Rosenbaum was awarded
the Knight’s Cross. The closing words, in German, “Alles klar!” (“Everything is OK!”), make my blood run
a little cold every time I read them.
Use the Basic Kriegsmarine 4-rotor machine, the 26th date, UKW=C, not B, and Gamma set on A. Click
on “Kriegsmarine” on the home page to get started. Run-off copies of everything, as instructed. This
will be more difficult than the regular 3-rotor machine. But if the Admiral and I are going to sign you off
as fully Enigma qualified, you must show us that you know how to run the 4-rotor beast. Remember,
substitute our machine settings for the sample machine settings that are used in the procedure.
