So, Enigma lovers, to get you ready for the New Year and real Enigma traffic, I've put a challenge message for you. This is a training message you've just received on 7.271 MHz. MAU 2250/6 001 45 TFQF FUVH WGZO KEXS KPBE ZUIN ZYTE BOXX TJXE GMCX ZSUM UMCA EHKY FTZF LQYK ZIBD PMCN RRQG BTGK PZLL OGTR YWNV ZXCX WOKA ZUIO FRMT YXJK UXNP OFVN PTRU GUWF XARS MOIZ QQGS AYEP UMKC QSKG FYFV VFUD UHHA PYHF YLRW CUWK TFQF FUVH Now to actually work on this message, you will need the Practice and Training key of the day, the Practice and training bigram of the day, and most importantly the Quick Reference Guide and the Kenngruppenbuch, M.Dv.Nr. 98. To get these you need the following link: Enigma M4 General Procedure. Hmm, I don't see a [EWCG2017TRITON] or something like that. Thats true. You need to decode the indicator groups with the bigram tables and look up which u-boat cipher key net you are on. Could be TRITON, could be HYDRA. Thats right! We have two radio nets, TRITON for deep ocean operations, and HYDRA for home waters uboat operations. The Quick reference guide is there to help figure these out. When you all get this one, a real OFFIZIER message will be sent next. Let the Fun Begin!! Mauser sends.

FOR THOSE WHO DOWNLOADED THE MESSAGE, IT WAS WRONG, GRRR. LOADED THE WRONG KEY. THE MESSAGE ABOVE CHECKS OUT ON THE SIMULATOR. LESSON LEARNED, WATCH CAREFULLY FOR 'O' VS 'Q'. BAD EYESIGHT ON MY PART, SAW THE 'O' THOUGHT IT WAS A 'Q'.

Getting some great feedback deserving a few words. The Kenngruppen on the keysheet and the Kenngruppen in the K-book are completely different. the one on the keysheet is an artifact. You are no longer checking to see if you are using the correct key of the day. NOW you are checking to see if you are using the right 'key'. You are either working with the TRITON 'KEY', or the HYDRA 'KEY'. So if you generate a message using the old basic Triton EWCG key, then you would use the keysheet and tell the world you are using key [EWCG2017TRITON]. On the other hand, if you are using the new 2018 Advanced Method Triton or Hydra keys, you will tell the world via the Schlusselkenngruppe (Key indicator group) derived from the Kenngruppennbuch.
Having fun yet?

OK, I could do it ....I was too lazy to read ..as usual.... and did not find the quick reference guide untill I was almost dispirited but now, I'm happy I've mastered done it once. Now ready to sink a few ships We will begin with the first war patrol of the U-186 that actually departed Kiel on 31 Dec 1942. For our purposes, the patrol will commence on 31 Dec 2017, and key sheets starting 1 Jan 2018 will be used. As we move through this patrol, you will get to sink three ships totalling 18,782 tons. Expect the preamble information for this to post here in the next 10 days. Mauser sends.
