Ok......so I could decrypt two messages with the new procedure. BUT, pretty much as it is always easier to understand than to speak a foreign language, I wanted to try if I could encrypt as well. Since I'm using the " practice keys and bigram", I am pretty confident about my settings and choice of key. What I'm interested in is if I got the Kennengrup right. As this is practice and I'want to know if I got it right and not if it " could eventually be deciphered with some luck", I'll provide you with the numbers I picked. 269 for Triton and 169 for all users. HSN 2312/24 001 014 PWVZ TMBW EBNG DCEY XQCV PMGP PWFW YLPP DTRW SYWG OQAF JVPW PWVZ TMBW We went off the rails at the bigram I'm afraid. PWVZ TMBW decodes on the practice bigram table as: CYWB XZTX. CYW is found in column 269 of the Kenngruppenbuch, however, YWB which is the correct trigram (you drop the first letter for the first group), is not found in column 269, but rather 370. Looking at the second group, XZT (first three letters, drop last), is in column 225, valid but not 169. Using the wrong trigram, ZTX, that is found in column 39. So, to verify the key used, I see 2312/24 implying the key for day 24. Is that what you used? What were your original book groups? Mauser sends.

I have checked my bigram table and to me, PWVZ TMBW decodes as CLWB XYTX. I am afraid you misread the V (in PWVZ) for a Y ...which then decodes as CYWB XZTX.
I did use the key for the 24th.
By the way...since the kennengrup on the keysheet is no longer used to check the key, is there another way of checking if we are using the right key? I've seen messages whose keys were wrong as far as the date was concerned but whose kennengrup helped find the right key (usually one line off).

I've seen messages whose keys were wrong as far as the date was concerned but whose kennengrup helped find the right key (usually one line off). Good catch! My eyesight is getting bad and reading a 'V' and 'Y' tend to get muddled. Merry Xmas to you as well, it decoded nicely. As far as the Kenngruppe, adding it on the keysheet was the best they could come up with since there was no Kenngruppenbuch available at the time. In actual operations, the first group identifies NOT the key of the day but rather if the right key was being used. Not sure where we could implement the old system since the intent is to prepare and send Enigma messages using as close to actual as is humanly possible the procedures used by the Kriegsmarine. One suggestion perhaps, instead of the so called 'random' trigraph used in the message header, perhaps the trigraph from the keysheet for that day, 'DYL' for the 24th for example instead of HSN or MAU that I like to use. Just a thought. Mauser sends.

Mmm... nice idea. I kinda like to use it as we do though, as a little signature or symbol. I've even looked already at which Kennengruppe from the Marinefunknamenliste I would choose as mine if I really need to change from HSN. Let's just trust people to use the key that goes with the date in the header.
