Good evening,
I have been on and off this site for a while and have found it to be a great resource for learning more about the Enigma. Emulators can be found anywhere, but this has been the most valuable source of information on how to properly operate the device in a historical fashion.
With some research, I have managed to figure out how to, more or less, use the M1 and M3 as they are intended to be used, though I still have some questions about how long a secure message should be. I am also working on the M4 and have almost got it understood. Unfortunately, I can't find a source to generate original bigram tables.
Anyways, if anyone is interested in practicing messages back and fourth with me, please let me know. I've figured so much out but, alas, I have no one to correspond with in encrypted messages.
Being so new, I'm not sure if I'm putting this threat in the correct place. If I am out of place, please correct me. In the meantime, I hope another enthusiast gets back to me.
Best, Ark Newman

I am not sure how you are going with replies . I suggest you Leave M1 alone for now and concentrate on M3 and M4. You have not mentioned or query; addressed the rotor and plugboard settings. You have mentioned the key setting text required to eventually set up the rotors. I am not sure if I am oversimplifying things. Do you have the cipher sheet settings. If not weyou

from the post of Dec 6th at 5:56pm I could not decode part I I could only partially decode part II with CRS as start position instead of CPS (THOUGHTHEENIGMAISDOUBTLESSLYOBSOLETEZZIDOBELIEVETHATITCANSTILLHAVEPRACJHATEKMTTIJRRHVVYXKNESFLBLSUDK) enigma breaker is still working on it I could decode totally part III
This is wierd since they all use the same settings, I would tend to believe an error was made somewhere.

Hi arknewman, I guess I was lucky that I found someone to regularly (almost daily) communicate with using the M4. He was instrumental in easing me from the M1 into the M4 proceedures and steered me through some of the many pitfalls. As much as I read and re-read the standard prooceedures, I just could not get it, and without some instructive emails I would still be floundering about. He also sent instructions and explained them one step at a time and we did not move on to the next step untill I got it to work. I am happy to try and help if I can, but you must understand that this is addictive, especially when you become involved in regular corrispondence. good luck.
