Yay, all done by hand, made only one mistake. At first I was going to make my answer all in OTP but then I thought about those who would also like to try it by hand. This is really a last resort way of crypting things. I can't see myself doing a really long message and encrypting is also harder (you can't really check if you made mistakes). It also leaves lots of paper traces afterwards. It took me almost one side of an A4 to decrypt zz9pza's message. Yet it is easy to remember how to do it. I had almost no practice and had not done it in a looong time, yet I quickly remembered. I thought that to you this system of enciphering is known, I give the description.
The most powerfull pencil-and-paper ciphers are those who combine fractionation and transposition. In this example we encrypt with a straddling checkerboard, followed by a double columnar transposition. To decrypt the message we reverse the encryption sequence. A variant of this methode is the famouse VIC-cipher from the Russian Spy Reino Hayhanen. It resisted all cryptanalysis attemps and remained unbroken until the defection of Hayhanen in '57.
To encipher a message we use three keys: One Checkerboard key and two Transposition keys.
Plain text : THIS IS A SECRET Checkerboard key: INDEPENDEN 1st Columnar key: LEONARDO 2nd Columnar Key: DAVINCI
First, we encipher the text with the Straddling Checkerboard. The Straddling Checkerboard is a table of 3 rows with each 10 letters. The first row contains the 8 highest frequency letters and 2 blanks. The 2nd and 3th row contain the rest of the alphabet, a point and a space.
We write out the key as column header. The first 10 letters of the key are numbered by alphabetic order, the last letter gets the number 0. If two letters of the key are the same, the first in the key gets the lowest number.
The rows receive the same number as the empty fields in the first row.

Hi Betcam, I knew about the double columnar transposition but never practiced outside the examples given in the explanations. Let alone such a long text. If I am right, to do the first transposition of a 369 letters message with a 7 letter key, I need to write (without mistakes) 5 columns of 53 digits and 2 columns of 52 digits. Sloppy as I am, it is most unlikely to happen. But I am wiling to try (by hand only) with the shorter messages. For the rest, I will (ab)use tools such as Cryptool (another one that is hard to grasp) or DCode (not much help with VIC crypto though). For the checkerboard, I had forgotten about this method to "mix" the letters. I was trying to do something like this |0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 -+------------------- | I N D E P 1|A B C F G H J K L 3|M O Q R S T U V W 6|X Y Z which I think is a variant where you use a keyword to scramble the alphabet inside the checkerboard, possibly combined with your method to yet increase the difficulty. If you're into hard "hand and pencil" coding, have you ever tried the SECOM system, (the perfect cipher : even with the keys and instructions, I still can't read it, secrecy by undoability). It is much too late now to ask my brain anything, but if tomorrow's work day isn't too busy, I will give it a shot. Anyway, thank you for giving me the oppportunity of decoding real messages.
