With the publication of the "Marinefunknamenliste U-Boote", listing over 2400 potential U-boats and their 3 character designation, some of us have decided to "adopt" a boat and use that for our address/signature when creating messages. I have volunteered to be the "custodian" of the adoption list, which I keep up to date in this thread and (hopefully) in this first message of the thread. If you wish to "adopt" a boat not already taken, please send me a private message rather than posting to this thread. Requests will be taken in the order received... if in the unlikely event there is a conflict between two users, the timestamp of the message will determine the winner (although bribes will be cheerfully accepted).
For those not familiar with the "Marinefunknamenliste U-Boote" document, it is part of the Kriegsmarine M4 Advanced procedures that were developed. For more details on those procedures, and to see a list of the documents available for it, you can use this link: M4 Advanced Procedures. Click here to go directly to the "Marinefunknamenliste U-Boote". Starting with page 6 it appears that the bottom row is missing so not all numbers will be listed.
One comment... you may want to check the service record of the boat you choose, if it was even a real one, to make sure you're not getting a "lemon". Both ZZ9pZa and I were interested in U-42, but the darn thing was sunk on its first service patrol. I know both Arnaud and I chose boat numbers that represent personally significant dates (mine is my wedding anniversary, April 4th).
