hi to all of you i'm Giangy from Italy. I have been a member of this fantastic group for about 1 year. I just want to as if ther is someone who decrypted successfully the message on newletter of September 2014? i'm getting in trouble with it.
Hello to all of my Enigma World Code Group Friends, The ghost of U-boat Admiral Donitz visited me last night in my sleep and ordered me to, “Challenge them! Challenge them!” We all know what that means, don’t we? Yes, sir, it’s Kriegsmarine Basic 4- rotor machine time! Thanks to member Jim Starbird, we have an actual Enigma message that was sent from U-boat Captain/Lieutenant Helmut Rosenbaum of the U-73 to U-boat headquarters on 11 August 1942 from the Mediterranean Sea. The aircraft carrier was the HMS Eagle. Rosenbaum was awarded the Knight’s Cross. The closing words, in German, “Alles klar!” (“Everything is OK!”), make my blood run a little cold every time I read them.
Use the Basic Kriegsmarine 4-rotor machine, the 26th date, UKW=C, not B, and Gamma set on A. Click on “Kriegsmarine” on the home page to get started. Run-off copies of everything, as instructed. This will be more difficult than the regular 3-rotor machine. But if the Admiral and I are going to sign you off as fully Enigma qualified, you must show us that you know how to run the 4-rotor beast. Remember, substitute our machine settings for the sample machine settings that are used in the procedure.
The message decodes. The keys are the ones in the Kriegsmarine basic procedures. The problem was that in 2014 the M4 procedure was wrong. When you converted the bigrams you had RXHG and QBRM. HXG does match the ID for the 26th in the keylist. But the way it was done, although the user had YSRB in the rotors (the ground setting), you only typed in the letters QBR instead of QBRM which is the correct way. In any case, the message key that is created is SPH and that sets the rotors as YSPH. When you run the message, you get the following plaintext output:
CONVOY ZZ FIFTEEN DESTROYERS AND ESCORT SHIPS ZZ TWO CRUISERS ZZ NINE TO TEN FREIGHTERS ZZ ONE AIRCRAFT CARRIER ZZ PROBABLY ONE BATTLESHIP. FAN SHOT AT AIRCRAFT CARRIER. FOUR HITS FROM FIVE HUNDRED METERS DISTANCE. LOUD SINKING NOISES. EVERYTHING OK. ROSENBAUM
Enjoy! Hope that helps.
