Good Day all! I am a beginner with EWCG Trying decryption newsletter one by one and stop on this: Quotation: Follow the Kriegsmarine decrypting procedure carefully! BRU 0320 /15 001 10 RBNB SQMA BWMW NWJO ZUXO INVVK UZJD VMPW TNPM FNJD GTCH RBNB SQMA Which trigram and out/inner settings table should I use? Seemed to me that the tables from manual www.enigmaworldcodegroup.com/basic-decrypting-procedure does not match. Thanx a lot Best Regards

Hi Jess, you require the correct code sheet and which bigram table to use. As far as I can see you have insufficient information to determine that requirement . You have the date, the 15, as mentioned in the header which just isn't enough, there are more experienced members who may be able to point out some steps. For example use neptun bigram table, use hydra inner outer settings etc. Come on guys, step up to the plate lets not make the forum too elitist.

Ok, jess76, johndean, I thought there was a typo in the title of the thread, and jess76 was referring to January 2019 instead of 2014. I apologize, my bad there. I'm at work, I'll take a look at home and you'll have an answer in 24 hours. Thanks!

Thanks all, but I start from decrypt letters from the very beginning and stop precisely on “Harry Hinsley’s Trawlers” letter and this is my first decrypting of Kreigsmarine Enigma code. Before I carefully read the manual, but in this case I do not find the bigram and the keys tables which I should use, may be that is the task for me to find them in the site? Because I have no problem with the settings M4

Hi
had a look at the newsletter, no success, the bigram table on the web site is from 2018, I used the one from the OTO procedure, again no success.
the original bigram may be gone, if so we will never get the start key.

Hi technician275!
Very strange) because the author gave us all keys for simple M3 Vermacht machine, which I have decrypted already without large problems)

Hello Jess,
So for Harry's Trawlers you use the machine settings U571 December 7, 1944:
07 | III IV II | 03 05 08 | BJ CD EF GL HN IR MT OV QS UY | BVG EPL UTM KFO |
Notice BVG is the correct kenngruppe for the day and message, indicated within the first 5 characters of the message body.
Set the M3 B Enigma using the settings above, and turn the rotors to the starting position LPO. Then type in VPQ. This should give you YVZ. If it doesn't recheck your settings. Reset the rotors for YVZ, then begin decrypting the message at ULIL.

Hello Robert
This is done, but at the end of the letter is the other more difficult task. Here it is
Quotation:
Follow the Kriegsmarine decrypting procedure carefully!
BRU 0320 /15 001 10
RBNB SQMA BWMW NWJO ZUXO INVVK UZJD VMPW TNPM FNJD GTCH RBNB SQMA
This needs to use M4 I suppose? And I have no clue where is bigram and key tables) that's the problem

Ah, I think I ran into this before - might be an incorrect bigram table. Try the first link below -> I'm off to work right now else I'd test this for you.
"Apr 1, 2019 at 5:20pm QuotePost OptionsPost by hobbit601 on Apr 1, 2019 at 5:20pm Well, if anyone cares I did some digging in the other threads and found a link to the correct bigram table for basic M4 decoding:
media.wix.com/ugd/abb462_47b496549b2b46f2a7af2f7d0d0f35fd.pdf
posted in the 'Need Some Help Decoding' thread enigmaworldcodegroup.freeforums.net/thread/64/help-decoding.
The bigram table posted in the instructions page docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/c8f6f9_d2fee990248a445c9ec0d543feed8fdc.pdf does not work for the M4 newsletter messages I have attempted so far. Would be good to update the instructions page with the correct link."

hobbit601If those are not the correct bigrams (no time for me to check them now), then I'm afraid technician275 is right. The ones on the site right now are from 2018, and the challenge is from 2014. Lessons learned from here

Besides, there is a mistake in the code - the sixth group INVVK - 5 letters instead 4 as used in Kreiegs! Does anybody have the clue about this?)) Thank you

jess76 , started decrypting it, have you identified the date of the message? It's based on 3 letters from the decrypted bigrams and as a hint, it's not the same date as the first message.
Edit: however, decrypting fails for now, even though the bigram results in an existing indicator.
